About Us
Initially known as the Trinity Drop-In Center, the Tree House was established in 1991 as a dream to create a community for young families to connect and support their child’s development. The vision was for families in the Copper Country to participate in healthy child development activities in nurturing environments. Encouraging parents and caregivers to play an active role in their child’s life.
In 1993, the Trinity Drop-In Center incorporated as a non-profit 501(c) organization under their new name, Keweenaw Family Resource Center. A dedicated staff and volunteers led many of the hallmark programs that are still available today.
Growing Together
As the resource center grew and community needs were identified, new programs were added. The Baby Closet was established to provide families with access to basic needs like diapers and clothing. Parents as Teachers Home Visiting was added to support families in nurturing their child’s early learning, growth, and development
The indoor playground known as the Tree House was added in 2010. It quickly became a favorite destination for families with little ones. It is the only indoor playspace designed by families and early childhood professionals in our region, specifically designed to support the physical and social development of children from birth through age 4. More than 600 children with their parents visit the playground over 3000 times each year.
Building Partnerships
In 2012, the resource center assumed the coordination role for the Copper Country Great Start Collaborative. The Great Start Collaborative works with early childhood organizations, the community, and families to ensure all children have a great start in our region. Under the direction of the Tree House, the collaborative has helped make significant changes to the early childhood system through community advocacy, agency partnerships, and elevating the voice of families.
The resource center became a founding member of the Michigan Family Resource Center Network in 2022. It quickly became one of the first organizations in Michigan to implement the National Standards of Quality for Family Strengthening and Support.
Growth & Awards
Keweenaw Family Resource Center officially became known as Tree House Family Resources in 2025. The Tree House continues to work to fulfill our mission to support, enrich, and strengthen family life in the Copper Country by providing a variety of programs that focus on families with young children.
Programs and services at the Tree House continue to grow and develop as the needs of families in the Copper Country grow and change. After identifying that no programs existed in our region to specifically support fathers, Dad’s Parenting Toolbox was established. When families struggled to connect to the community resources they needed, a referral navigation system was developed.
The Tree House serves as a critical first link to community resources for many families in the Copper Country. It has received numerous awards and nominations, both at the local and state levels, including the prestigious Program Award from Michigan Children's Trust Fund for the home visiting program for program quality, excellence and innovation. At the national level, it has been recognized by the Episcopal Church of the USA as a Jubilee Center for dedicated service to those in need and recently, multiple Community Sparkplug nominations for their work in expanding childcare access.
Funding comes from a variety of sources, including grants, local service organizations, and individual donations.
